The Legend of Da Hong Pao
Few teas have a story as legendary as Da Hong Pao.
According to Chinese folklore, an imperial scholar travelling through the Wuyi Mountains became gravely ill before his examinations. Local monks prepared tea from a handful of ancient tea bushes, restoring his health. After achieving first place in the imperial examinations, the grateful scholar returned and draped his treasured red ceremonial robes over the tea bushes as a sign of respect and gratitude. From that day forward, the tea became known as Da Hong Pao, or Big Red Robe.
Today, the original six mother trees remain protected within Wuyishan and are considered national treasures. They are no longer harvested commercially, making authentic Da Hong Pao produced in the surrounding Wuyi region the closest expression of this legendary tea available to tea lovers.
Authentic Wuyi Rock Tea
The Wuyi Mountains are unlike any other tea-growing region in the world.
Towering cliffs, ancient rock formations, mist-covered valleys, and mineral-rich soils create an environment that gives Wuyi oolong teas their unmistakable depth and complexity. This unique terroir produces the celebrated rock rhyme that tea enthusiasts seek when drinking authentic Yancha.
Our Limited Edition Da Hong Pao showcases these defining characteristics with remarkable balance and refinement.

Personally Selected in Wuyishan
In April 2026, we travelled throughout the Wuyi Mountains to better understand the region’s tea culture and meet local producers.
During our visit, we explored the tea markets in Wuyishan, just a short distance from the protected scenic area where the famous mother trees grow. After tasting numerous teas, we selected this Da Hong Pao for its exceptional quality, authentic character, and outstanding value.
Rather than purchasing through exporters or large distributors, we brought back a limited quantity ourselves so our customers could experience genuine Wuyi Rock Tea sourced at origin.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this tea made from the original Da Hong Pao mother trees?
No. The original six mother trees in Wuyishan are protected national treasures and are no longer harvested for commercial production.
This tea was purchased in Wuyishan, the birthplace of Da Hong Pao, from the local tea market near the protected scenic area. Like virtually all Da Hong Pao available today, it is produced from cultivated tea plants grown in the Wuyi Mountains using traditional processing methods.
What is “Rock Tea” (Yancha)?
Yancha, or “rock tea,” refers to oolong teas grown in the rocky landscape of the Wuyi Mountains. The mineral-rich soil and unique climate give these teas their famous yan yun, or “rock rhyme”—a lingering mineral character that is prized by tea enthusiasts.
How is Da Hong Pao different from green or black tea?
Da Hong Pao is an oolong tea, meaning it is partially oxidized. This creates a flavour profile that sits beautifully between green and black tea, offering roasted, floral, fruity, and mineral notes in the same cup.
How many cups does one 8g package make?
One 8g packet is ideal for a traditional gongfu tea session and will produce approximately 8–10 infusions. If brewing western style, you can divide the packet into two or three servings.
Does this tea contain any flavourings?
No. This is 100% pure Da Hong Pao oolong tea. Its roasted, floral, chocolate, and mineral notes develop naturally through traditional Wuyi tea processing and the unique terroir of the Wuyi Mountains.
